The usual response you get when you tell people you're going to The Place Next Door is the obvious question "Next door to what?"



Fortunately the answer is quite simple: it is next door to the Feathers Hotel in Burnside. The separate building, at the corner of Greenhill and Glynburn Roads, is part of the Feathers and is home to a café-style restaurant and bar.

Meals or drinks can be taken at tables inside the bar area, in a small, open dog-friendly section, or in the glassed-off conservatory. If you prefer not to sit in, all food items on the menu are available as take-away.



The menu is varied and you should have no difficulty finding something suitable to eat. Stuffed chicken breast, oven-roasted salmon, and steak can range in cost from mid-to-high twenties with a wide choice of cheaper options (pasta, curry, fish, salt and pepper squid, salads, and so on). There are baguettes or wraps for under ten dollars and a range of starters available.

The Place Next Door refers to itself as TPND. This can cause momentary confusion when you see menu items like TPND Burger and start to translate it as "tomato, pumpkin, nutmeg and dill" before you realise its meaning (I'd twigged to it by the second letter - honest). For the record: the TPND Burger is prime beef, fresh tomato, bacon, cheese, egg, lettuce, and tomato relish, served with chips.



The pizzas include some standard selections, such as Margarita (fresh tomato and basil) and Hawaiian (leg ham and pineapple), but there are interesting gourmet-style choices too. For example, the Vegetarian includes roast pumpkin and fetta in its toppings and there are Thai Chicken or Smoked Salmon pizzas on the menu.

Some of these pizzas may sound unusual but the proof is in the eating and, if the one I had is anything to go by, they have worked out some very nice combinations. I chose the Marinated Lamb, which includes fetta, olives, Spanish onion, tzatziki and fresh rocket.



All the meals are well-presented and the service quite good. There is a room out the back full of poker machines, for those who wish to indulge, but these do not intrude on the eating areas in any way.

The Place Next Door is open early every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is a separate breakfast menu available until midday, or until early afternoon on weekends. There is an assortment of cakes and muffins if you just feel like a coffee with something sweet.
