Located in the beautiful King Valley of Victoria, Pizzini Winery and Cooking School is definitely worth a visit. Pizzini winery is all about family, friends, food and wine and what a great combination that is.
Three hours drive north of Melbourne, the King Valley invites you to take a step back and enter a slower and more relaxed pace of life. The lush green valleys, colours that change with seasons and fresh country air are the perfect backdrop to enjoying the company of others while sharing some of the region's best food and wine.
Pizzini Wines is a family-owned winery producing many Italian wine varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Arneis, Prosecco, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Alfredo (Fred) and Katrina Pizzini planted their first grapevines in 1978 and their first wines were produced in 1994. The family history goes back to the 1950s when the parents of Alfredo arrived in Australia and settled in the King Valley and eventually became involved in growing tobacco and later in wine growing.
Today the operation of Pizzini wines is truly a family business with all four adult children working in their business. In 2015 Pizzini winery won the Qantas AustralianTourism Award for Best Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries after winning the Victorian Award in the same category. This year they have also won the Victorian Award which gives them a good chance to win the same award at the national level.
Besides being awarded for the way their business operates they also produce a large variety of excellent wines, many of which highlight their Italian heritage. Verdicchio, verduzzo, friulano, nebbiolo sit happily amongst shiraz, merlot and riesling when it comes to the wide choice of wines. The
Vino e Vita wine club gives members many advantages such as discounts, free delivery, and special events and offers so it is worth joining.
Katrina Pizzini is the powerhouse behind the very popular cooking school
A Tavola which runs cooking classes throughout the year except August and September. Classes of maximum 10 participants teach you how to make Italian pasta and gnocchi but extend to dinner party cooking, Christmas food, curing meats and other delicacies, all under the watchful, patient and competent eye of Katrina. For details on dates and classes please see
here .
The Pizzini family are very committed to the King Valley and its locals and visitors. This is evident in many of their events and promotion of the area as a visitor destination. Their quarterly newsletter
Tre Amori keeps you up to date with what's happening in the area and in the winery but also gives interesting facts and information about wines and wine-making.
Many
food and wine events are held at Pizzini wines each year - the Gnocchi Carnevale, Sangoviese e Salsicce and the Three Italians long lunch are some of these. The winery and large lawned areas are also a perfect venue for weddings and other events, including corporate meetings. While there is no restaurant at the winery the
Mountain View Hotel at Whitfield, also run by members of the family, provides delicious lunches and dinners 7 days a week. If looking for accommodation the hotel also provides four units. Pizzini Winery also has a two-bedroom cottage on the vineyard itself. For other accommodation in the King Valley area please see
