Fitzroy Street in St Kilda is often overlooked for eateries, when locals and tourists flock to Acland Street in favour of cake shops.
That said, there are some fantastic places to eat in one of the city's oldest and most established bayside streets, and Pizza E Birra is one of them.
Positioned on the end of the popular strip of bars and restaurants (right next to the big red M), on the corner of Fitzroy Street and Canterbury Road, Pizza E Birra is a modern Italian restaurant, serving up delicious eats, which suit families, friends and couples alike.
The newest owners of Pizza E Birra took over in December last year, and are working hard to grow their reputation as being the go-to Italian restaurant in St Kilda. It's working. Pizza E Birra's chosen staff are attentive, helpful and very friendly, the food is top notch.
Choosing to dine in this oh-so-stylish restaurant on a Friday night, we were seated in a great spot, right by the window, where Tram 96 rolled by and the busy world of St Kilda trundled on into the night; a people watcher's delight.
Rather than choose blind, we let our waiter for the night, Giosué, recommend a handful of restaurant favourites to try, starting with the sweet but delicious St Lucia cocktail, and a house wine for the Mr.
As a vegetarian myself, I had ample choice and was not disappointed. To begin, the simple yet fresh and tasty Bruschette did the trick, and the Bufalotta dish with a side of Prosciutto ham, gleefully devoured by my partner.
Main couse, we chose the Porcini pizza and eggplant pasta. Being a pizza restaurant, this is obviously a speciality for Pizza E Birra, and awards for the size of the wood fire pizza's alone, must be granted, but all jokes aside, I am told by my partner, that his Porcini was an interesting combination (porcini, ricotta, Italian pork sausage & black truffle), but a good one. I enjoyed my pasta just as much, which may appear small in comparison to the gigantic pizza, but was more than satisfying.
Moving onto the finale, and our waiter insisted we try the Fior Di Fragola; a strawberry infused pizza, being a bright shade of pink and quite possibly the most unique dessert I've had. Not too sweet though, and I could it imagine being a big hit with the kids.
Pizza E Birra is a delightful restaurant in the bustle of Fitzroy Street, in a great position, with a menu offering a combination of fresh and simple ingredients, which make for a tasty feed for all. A special mention to all the lovely staff who made us feel welcome, suggesting we bring the kids back with us next time ... and that we will.
