Fittingly located along Pirie Street, the notable thing about Pirie & Co is that their food covers a wide range of cuisines, not just the pub foods that are typically seen at most bars. The place proved to be very popular with the locals with a large crowd present when we visited.

Their Pan Fried Market Fish uses fish that is in season, so it is advisable to ask about the type of fish that is being used on the day as the price of the dish is influenced by it. The kingfish that was used during our visit was fresh and had a nice meaty texture. The sambal sauce gave the dish a bit of a Thai flair, while the papaya salad added an element of freshness.

A good choice for vegetarians, their Gnocchi was light and fluffy with a good amount of tomato sauce to enhance its flavour. The broccolini hidden beneath the gnocchi added texture to the dish and the basil chips provided a bit of crunch. Served with the gnocchi were a few slices of toasted bread to soak up any excess tomato sauce.

The Chicken Kiev served at Pirie & Co differs from the norm. The chicken was grilled instead of being coated in breadcrumbs. We liked that the chicken was juicy and had a nice charred flavour but thought it could have used a bit more garlic butter filling. The salsa verde (herby green sauce) did a good job of bringing out the chicken's flavour and the pumpkin soubise and broccolini were good partners to the chicken.

Great for those that want something light, the filling of their Portabello Arancini was not too thick and the crumb coating was a good contrast. The salsa verde complemented the earthy taste of the Arancini well and the garlic aioli helped to tie everything together.

For dessert, we chose their Choc Raspberry Tart. Both the pastry and filling had a rich chocolatey taste that was set off wonderfully by the slightly sour raspberry dust. The tart is best enjoyed eaten with the cream to help balance out its rich flavour.

The bar is small and cosy with the tables spaced a little close to each other. If you are looking for a bar offering something a bit different, consider giving Pirie & Co a visit. As the restaurant does not serve dinner every day, do give them a call before going.
