Aarrr! Shiver me timbers! Me wooden leg has termites. No such calamities need to befall Melbourne kids since there are lots of possibilities for pirate play throughout the city. You can even become proficient in Pirate talk and star during "Talk Like a Pirate Day" which is held on the 19th of September each year.

The mightiest pirate ship is at the Roy Dore Reserve playground in Carrum. This huge ship with mermaid figurehead atop its bow is headed for the Caribbean with sails billowing (shade sails that is since the ship and its pirates are well protected from the burning sun by huge shade sails).

Poking through the sides of the ship are three powerful cannons (well powerful enough to deposit a few cannon balls in the shaded sandpit at least). Either cross a long net walkway, scale a rope ladder or squeeze up an enclosed ladder to access the steering wheel and a chance to zoom down the two big wave slides. Is some-one disobeying the Captain? Then hang 'im from the yardarm or walk the plank on the ship.

There is a lot of other equipment for kids including a birds nest swing and climbing walls plus an area with exercise equipment for parents. The playground has shaded tables and seats, BBQs, water tap, shelters and toilets are located across an adjacent oval.

Another mighty pirate ship is perched on top of a hill at Bayview Park, Point Cook. The huge ship has a crow's nest on the top deck, binoculars to search for bounty to plunder as well as a fireman's pole.

Are there any mutineers on board? If so, make them walk the plank to a frighteningly steep slide which plummets down the hill to a flat area with a big pyramid rope climbing frame and birds nest swing. There is a shelter with tables, BBQs and water tap to enable the family to extend their pirate time together.

The fully fenced Geelong Play Space in Geelong has a big pirate ship with the Jolly Roger flying proudly.

There are a lot of other fun areas here including a musical bridge, sheep springers, bamboo tunnel, cottage ruin, sun dial, stepping stones of various shapes through the trees, sound machines scattered about, sandpits and big maze made from different coloured pavers. The area has shaded and unshaded seats, water tap, toilets and a large shelter with tables and BBQs.
Other playgrounds with ships which pirates could commandeer are:

• Peter Scullin Reserve, Mordialloc which has a shaded play structure in the shape of a ship.
• Mornington Park, Schnapper Point Drive in Mornington has a large ship without much additional play equipment
• Fergusons Paddock, Heidelberg-Kinglake Rd, Hurstbridge has a pirate shaped structure within a massive playground.area
• Coogoorah Park, Anglesea has buried treasure beside the shipwreck Inverlochy

The Polly Woodside has a Pirate day on the first Sunday of every month. You can dress as a pirate and search for hidden treasure, play tug of war and have your face painted (with a skull and cross-bones of course).

The Polly Woodside is located at 2A Clarendon Street, South Wharf. Admission prices are Adults: $15, Concession: $12, Child: $8 and Family: $42 (including two adults and up to four children).

There are plenty of other opportunities for pirate action including:

• Pirate Pete's Mini-golf at Maru Koala and Animal Park on the Bass Highway.
• Pirate Ship water play area at Oakleigh Recreational Centre .
Kidzmania Indoor Playcentre and Café in West Footscray has a Large Pirate Jumping Castle.
• Kids Party Entertainers such as Dreamscape Kids Entertainment will come to your party as a pirate.
Playzone Play Centre in Noble Park has a Pirate Ship themed party area.

Go out and plunder, ye scurvy dogs.
