Pirate Life Brewery at Port Adelaide opened in 2019 after their beer became so popular around the country that they had to move to much bigger premises. Having outgrown the original Hindmarsh brewery, Pirate Life has since gone from strength to strength. This massive expansion on Pirate Life's operations is situated in one of the historic old Dalgety wool store sheds on Baker Street in Port Adelaide and is open seven days a week.

The 14 metre high ceilings offer plenty of space for the massive brewery operations which are on display behind the 22-yard long bar (that's as long as a cricket pitch!). The bar offers a huge range of beers and sours on 24 taps.

What are sours? Well, they are still beers but will have fruit added to the kettle during the brewing to blend with the ale, creating a fruity, tangy, and sour tasting ale with an effervescent fizz. The process might be described as a cross between beer and winemaking. Whatever it is, Pirate Life produces some amazing sours including their now popular Acai & Passionfruit Sour, which is perfect for a summer day's quaffing.

The range of beers has a few of their original brews and a changing roster of fresh new creations. Most recently, Pirate Life has come up with a 'Fringe Draught'. A fresh and familiar beer with proceeds from sales going towards supporting Adelaide street artists.

If the range seems overwhelming, you can order beer tasting paddles at a reasonable cost. It's a great way to fit as many different styles of beer as you can into your visit. There's also plenty of hand-picked Australian wines and spirits available for the 'other' drinkers.

The brewery has heaps of space inside and out. Inside you'll find plenty of tables set out in a beer-hall style with a shuffleboard table, art on display, a video game and pinball arcade, a barber, and a merchandise shop. Outside, you'll find plenty of tables and chairs along with a couple of food trucks. The OG Food Truck is open seven days a week.

For the hungry, the food truck offering usually includes a fire-pit cooking inspired truck (weekends only), and the OG Food Truck offering tasty eats ranging from fried halloumi and arancini to bigger meals like salads, fish, and burgers. They are all a reasonably sophisticated take on simple pub grub.

If you're interested in what goes on behind the bar, you can also book educational tours. Check the website for details and to book. Pirate Life Brewery can also host larger functions.

Beer always tastes better fresh from the tap and it doesn't come any fresher than the taphouse at Pirate Life Brewery in Port Adelaide. It's an excellent place to spend a couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere and great beer and great food with friends.

Pirate Life Brewery Port Adelaide is on Baker Street in the heart of the port and is open 11 am – 10 pm Sunday to Thursday and 11 am until midnight Friday and Saturday.
