On the surface, seems to recycle the old "let's make fun of religion" trope, but in fact, this work created by two believers is about finding the funny in religion, especially Christianity. Join Chris and Werzel, two experienced comedians and performers, one also an Anglican priest, to sail unknown waters in search of hidden treasure.

About the Show

To be a pirate is to fearlessly sail the seas in search of treasure, especially hidden and buried treasure. Pirate Church takes this idea and says that religion should be the fearless search for the treasures of the soul.

Today religion is a safe environment, where our rights to religion are protected and a religious exploration is safe as a Caribbean Cruise. Is this is a good thing?

While is it common to make fun of religion, and let's face it, religion is an easy target. But this is done from the outside looking in, or those leaving religions attacking as they flee. is more of a joke from the inside. In other words, religion laughing at itself.

The performers

Paul Montague, known as Werzel, is a comedian and actor with 15 years experience. Described as the King of Perth Comedy, he has also appeared in film, theatre and on TV. His religious credentials are less illustrious as a seminary drop-out, but he is still a believer.

He is joined by Reverend Chris Bedding, who is both an Anglican priest and a professional comedian, actor, director and musician. He is also an activist campaigning for things such as asylum seeks, marriage equality and workers rights.

Together they have formed, let's just say, a holy comedic alliance to poke fun at something that they care about, which is religion while exploring the deeper journey that religion could, and they believe, should be.

Tickets

Tickets are $29.57 with concession prices. The ticket also includes entry into 2 other events that are part of the Abundant Festival , John Carroll and An Evening with Michael Leunig, making it excellent value for money.

Getting There

The performance will be held at St John's College on the University of Queensland's St Lucia Campus. Being a university campus, there is a lot of public transportation with numerous buses that stop either on the campus on just outside. The closest bus stop for St John's is the UQ Lakes bus stop. Personally, though I prefer to take a leisurely ferry ride to the University of Queensland, but it is much slower than the bus.

Driving isn't too bad and there is plenty of paid parking on the campus. Let's not forget that you can also cycle there along the river.

Before and After the Show

The performance is on at 7 pm, so that gives you plenty of time to enjoy a meal or even drinks in the area. If you haven't visited the University of Queensland campus before, there is actually a number of nice places to eat and drink on campus. My favourite is St Lucy's Cafe next to the tennis courts. This is a great place for a light meal and drinks.

If you are heading there early, you can enjoy a walk around the campus and if you are early enough, a visit to the University of Queensland Art Museum.
