Melbourne, Pippo and Pasquale are back! After several false starts thanks to Covid, the duo are back live on stage. Their new show
Pippo & Pasquale: From the Garage to the Stage is a two-hour show filled with a mix of stand-up comedy, sketches, media and audience participation.
Throughout lockdown, Pippo and Pasquale aka Piero Viavattene and James Liotta along with their respective wives Maria, kept their fans entertained. Whether it was a live on Facebook or hilarious daily clips about curfews to mask-wearing and all in between, Liotta and Viavattene helped us through the tough times.
At the Darebin Arts Centre for two nights, Pippo and Pasquale opened to a resounding cheer from a packed theatre. "
We haven't seen an audience in a long time, it's nice to see your faces without a mask", commented Viavattene.
Referring to the long-enduring lockdown and theatre closures that went along with it, James remarked "
Our tickets have been on sale for 14 years". Right from the onset, the pair have a quibble about who stopped calling who in lockdown. "
You didn't put me in your bubble," complains Viavattene. With that Liotta responds, "
My bubble was full. Theresa and Karen were offering me things you couldn't offer me."
The comedy duo hugs it out with Liotta leaving the stage briefly and returning with a face shield and sanitiser that he applies generously. "
Well, you did touch me", jokes Liotta. Again, they had the audience in fits of laughter as they poked fun at one another. It's clear Liotta and Viavattene have a strong genuine bond offstage and that translates to impeccable comedic timing and rhythm on stage. This was demonstrated well when Liotta messed up a line as his alter ego Pasquale and Pippo picked him up on it. The off the cuff way they handled the situation confirms their prowess on stage.
Without giving too much away, Pippo and Pasquale delve into their Italian heritage and quip about never being allowed to have a lunch order on Friday like the Aussie kids. The show cleverly interweaves video clips and skits throughout and takes the audience along for the ride. A special mention goes out to promotor Dom Arpa Productions for bringing the show to stages across Australia. Not an easy feat given the hurdles of Covid.
Pippo and Pasquale kept the momentum going as they helped remove the shackles of lockdown. It's been a long arduous wait but Pippo and Pasquale are back tearing up the northern suburbs with their infectious antics.
