Located at the corner of Johns Lane and Main Street in the bustling township of Hahndorf, is a beautiful small park called Pioneer Memorial Gardens. The gardens was opened in 1939 to celebrate the centenary of the town's settlement and also to commemorate the founding families and pioneers of the village.

Over the years, the gardens have had some alterations and additions and today it is one of the main attractions for visitors to Hahndorf.



An impressive archway with a clock at the top serves as an entrance to the gardens. On the two pillars of the archway were inscribed the names of the 52 pioneer settlers.



There is a time capsule enclosed in this archway which will be opened in 2039 when the town celebrates its 200 years of settlement.





Standing back from the archway is a memorial to Captain Dirk M Hahn, the man involved in the founding of Hahndorf which was named after him.





Beautiful shrubs, plants and trees surround the gardens. There are shady places and seats to rest and enjoy the surroundings. At one end is a big rotunda for picnics and there is also a playground behind it with nice play equipment for children. There are also toilet facilities in the park.





There is also a memorial called "Food and Faith" to honour the pioneer German women of Hahndorf. In those days these courageous women would take a 35 kilometre winding bush track all the way to an Adelaide market to sell their vegetables and dairy produce. They would leave Hahndorf by midnight and arrive at Beaumont at four o'clock in the morning. Here they would rest by a creek and sang Lutheran hymns and then continue their trip to Adelaide.
