Once upon a time intellectual curiosity was a thing to be valued, but in these days of easy Google answers and a prevailing 'Whatever!" attitude, science, and often just an interest in the world and how it works, is often seen as not cool, especially among young people. It's okay, this isn't going to be a preachy article. I'm just going to tell you about the coolest thing to happen to science since Einstein's hair-do - science in the pub, courtesy of . And it's coming soon to a pub near you.

Why didn't someone think of this before? The festival was established by a group of postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in 2012, with the aim of bringing science to the people, and what better venue than a pub? The main festival takes place every year in May, simultaneously in pubs across the world. The inaugural AU festival ran in Sydney over three nights in May 2014, and has now spread to 16 cities across Australia. Curiously, Queensland has shown a particular interest in the festival, with six Queensland cities now signed up, more than any other state: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Townsville, Dalby, Cairns and Toowoomba. I'm not sure if that means we're more curious than people in other states or whether we just like beer more. You decide.

Over a glass or two of your favourite tipple you get to listen to talks about the latest in scientific research, given by the researchers themselves. And these are interactive events, largely run by volunteers. You can ask questions (there's no such thing as a dumb one) and present ideas. No prior knowledge of the subject is required, just your own curiosity and interest in the world, people and science. And it will only cost you $6 for the presentation, plus whatever you spend on beer and food. Some events will also feature science trivia and the opportunity to win prizes.

Events cover the following subjects:

Beautiful Mind - neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry
Atoms to Galaxies - physics, chemistry, maths, astronomy
Our Body - medicine, human biology, health
Planet Earth - geosciences, plant sciences, zoology
Tech Me Out - biotechnology, robotics, computers
Our Society - law, history, politics, policy, languages

In Brisbane there will be no fewer than 18 fascinating presentations, covering subjects as diverse as the brain, virtual reality, cancer, aquaculture, 3D printing and, not surprisingly given the location, beer. I'm particularly interested in Learning and the ageing brain to see if I can pick up a few tips to help me remember just where I left my glasses.

Venues for Brisbane talks are:

The Paddo, 18 Given Terrace, Paddington. See pub website here .

Loft West End, 100 Boundary Street, West End. See pub website here .

The Normanby Hotel, 1 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill. See pub website here .

Gold Coast:

On the Gold Coast 3 talks addressing physics, zoology and medical science will be given at Parkwood Tavern, corner of Olsen Ave & Wintergreen Drive, Parkwood. See here for details of Gold Coast events, and to book.
