Imagine living in a dessert; unbearable heat; your throat drying up; your tongue turning into sand paper. Maybe I'm exaggerating but that is what it can feel like in Dubai because less than three decades ago this part of the UAE was just that. Enough of the history lesson, when the weather becomes unbearable, or rather, in the period just before the dry heat comes it's all too easy to reach for an ice cream - smooth, sweet and cooling. As delicious and refreshing as it can be, ice cream (even the 'low-fat' kind), is more of a calorific treat than an option to help battle the hot weather.
Natural Pinkberry with blueberries and pistachios
In such times of need frozen yoghurt (froyo), is the answer, specifically Pinkberry. It is one of the most successful brands on the market, and there are plenty of reasons behind the hype.
Pinkberry sell the typical three flavours (strawberry, chocolate, vanilla), and a seasonal flavour. What set's this froyo chain apart, however is the quality of the yoghurt. It's frozen, yes, but they've managed to retain a creaminess that is akin to yoghurt you buy in store, but better. The yoghurt doesn't have that saccharine-like after taste some other froyo type have either.
While Pinkberry is famous in the states, it's gaining a substantial following in the UAE, not just Dubai, too where temperatures soar and people want to cool down with a frozen snack without the guilt.
Chocolate flavoured Pinkberry with chocolate shavings
I find myself in Pinkberry every time I visit Mirdif mall because it's reasonably priced (18DHS for small, 25 DHS for medium, 30DHS for large), there's enough seating for large groups of friends/families (and I find it's better to sit when you take kids to save any messy instances), and my nieces and nephews see it as a treat.
This non-fat, low-sugar froyo will beat the 'too-much-sun' headaches, and keep your weight down and the kids happy. Hurrah for Pinkberry
