How to get the most out of a P!nk concert.

Have you been to see P!nk! YET? Don't miss out! All the drama is at Rod Laver Arena. Brimming with soul tearing purity and shimmering acrobatics. This show leaves you shivering and sparkling with wonder.

What to expect

The Beautiful Trauma tour combines old favourites with new hits. Her past two concerts have established a reputation for surprise and spectacle. Pink's imagination has exploded to an Alice in Wonderland wonky dimension. The reality of the themes are present whilst her signature humour has blown everything perfectly out of proportion.

Expect immersion in a really great time as she takes the audience with her. The electricity of her charisma fills the building, breathing fire into the ice of the arena. You boil then find yourself once again out in the cold blinking, wondering where the time went.

What to consider

What to bring?
Yourself and your ticket, little else.

It really helps to know exactly where your ticket is and leave backpacks and bottles at home. This makes getting through security much less disruptive.

Securing entrance

I do not recommend finding a safe spot in your pocket or purse for the ticket. The ticket is valuable but worth nothing if you cannot find it. If you have to go through a million compartments to get to it you'll have s stressful experience. Have the ticket in your hand on approach to the gate. Make sure it is the ticket, not the receipt for the ticket. This erases the possibility of a panic attack and misery.

Seating choice

Your concert personality will determine your choice of seating. There are a number of packages on offer as can be checked out on the Ticketek website. The biggest differentiation is whether you opt to stand or are happier in a seat.

If you are on the floor as I was there is advice to arrive early. (8am? The concert gates open at 6pm) to start lining up.

I was too cold and tired to follow this advice. I do love a good queue but the suggestion of 8am had me questioning my dedication as a fan. Ice cold rain and plain unfriendly Melbourne conditions soon swept those concerns from my head.

I arrived just before 6pm. Once through the gates, I was ushered to the left of where the seated ticketholders were lining up. Here tickets were exchanged for wristbands. You could feel building excitement in the people around. There is always a mixed bunch at a P!nk concert.

Food and Companionship

It is possible to buy fish and chips from the cafeteria. Most people were in groups and were able to reserve a spot in line and secure a hot treat. It does highlight that taking a friend can improve your ability to make the most of the evening.

Finding a spot to stand

Once you file down through the seats and onto the floor, it helps if you have some vision of what preference you hold. My priority was some hard surface against which to lean being already quite fatigued. Acting from experience, I headed straight for the edges and was able to wedge myself into a spot next to the railing. The set up with screens covers blind spots but the edge does block any view onto the main stage, including direct experience of the sets.

Pink moves around constantly, including up onto a walkway right near the railing. The disadvantages are made up for. If you wanted to be closest to the railing looking straight onto the middle of the stage, well that's when you arrive at 8.30am to queue.

Keeping your energy up

The security over the railing handed out cups of water throughout the show. Rod Laver Arena is Gold standard when it comes to showing a duty of care and keeping events running smoothly. Bring coats and wrapping as the air is chilled. People warm everything up, make sure you have a carry bag in case you start to perspire.

Protecting your ears

You did sign up for loud, didn't you! If you want to preserve your hearing for P!nk, you can bring some earplugs. Talk in the crowd was that the supporting band, The Rubens were great. They brought loads of electricity and by the time P!nk arrived, every seat was occupied and people were dancing.

Knowing where your flashlight is on your phone.

If you want the opportunity to shine your light up and signify your presence (as was called for at one point) this can be valuable knowledge.

Camera and video

Many people were filming on their phone. I took minimal pictures as I have discovered in the past that trying to take a picture of someone spinning around your head is a cumbersome activity which interferes with the enjoyment.

Leaving the arena

This can be the most claustrophobic moment. Everyone having the same idea at the same time creates human walls. Patience and decisiveness is the best approach.

Getting safely home

Try and recover from the daze of experience before you meander out the door. Melbourne is frigid at the moment. Sweating and then meeting frostbite with not enough protection could reward a great experience with the misery of a cold.

If you are alone, have a clear idea of how you are getting home. Make sure your phone is charged so you can meet your lift without anxiety. There are many people about but they evaporate quickly and if it not a very nice time of night to navigate the streets.
