Situated on a small alley off Carpenter Street,
Pinggai Cafe is an unassuming little cafe serving up food that credits the Dayak culinary heritage. Its signature dishes include ayam pansuh, char siew fried noodles, dabai-tempoyak fried rice.
As tempoyak wasn't available when we visited, we simply tried the fried rice with dabai alone. Dabai can be described as a Sarawakian olive with yellow flesh. It is seasonal and hence often preserved for use in cooking. In our fried rice, the dabai paste is stir-fried with other condiments until fragrant. This produces not only a distinct smell but also a unique flavour. I thought the finished dish was savoury and delicious. By the way, in case you're wondering, tempoyak is made of fermented durian.
Pinggai Cafe
Ayam pansuh is an ethnic dish consisting of chicken cooked in bamboo and various aromatics. It has a distinct flavour due to the fragrance of the bamboo. In addition to chicken, the cafe also offers pansuh babi which is the pork version.
If you'd like to taste an assortment of things, then ordering nasi ulam is the way to go. A variety of ulam (close equivalent to salad, I guess) and sambal is served with rice. The portion is huge, so it's best shared with others on the table.
Dabai fried rice
