A fine example of revival gothic style architecture
Opened in 1867, Pilgrim Uniting Church was built as a memorial to the founder of Congregationalism in South Australia. Thomas Quinton Stow had great influence during the early years of the colony.

The church was designed by Robert George Thomas, the same architect who designed Flinders Street Baptist Church. Its building has since become a fine example of revival gothic style architecture. Stone from Glen Osmond Quarry was used in the construction.

After about a hundred years, the church merged with Pirie Street Methodist Church as a result of expensive building maintenance costs and declining attendance. Significant historical items such as the carved wooden pulpit panelling, gallery railings and memorial stained glass windows were retrieved and installed in the church.

Its pipe organ was originally built by Eagle Ltd of London but had been enlarged, renovated and revoiced by others. The musical tradition of the church remains strong with free lunchtime performances either on the organ or in the forecourt. A couple of weeks ago, singer and guitarist Dingo brought some great songs to the event. For a full schedule of bands etc, please head to their website and Facebook page. Art exhibitions are also held for the public every now and then.

The church is open from 12pm to 2pm on weekdays. It can be found at 12 Flinders Street in the city.

Good to have such a strong musical presence in the city for the workers durin lunch time. I Hope they keep it up for as long as they can do so. THe other church down the road also have some similar music program but might not be so often as this one.
