I have to confess, before taking on this project, I didn't know a lot about reformer Pilates. Sure, I had done some mat work before, but assumed a reformer to be some sort of medieval rope system which sounded a little too strong and organised for my less than perfect coordination. So when I was offered the chance to visit Cath at Pilates Place for a couple of sessions at her new studio in Mt Gravatt, I agreed with some trepidation.

First of all, I needn't have been concerned. Cath takes the classes which are suitable for people of all fitness levels, experience and levels of coordination (even mine - although i did almost face plant once!). Even coming from a relatively low-base, the classes were challenging but thoroughly enjoyable.

So what exactly is reformer Pilates, I hear you ask? It is different to mat-based Pilates, in that, as the name suggests, it is exercise that takes place on a reformer. The reformer itself is a machine consisting of a carriage which you hold steady as you push or pull. Resistance can be increased or decreased by the number of springs connected to the carriage.

The exercises are varied and include strength, flexibility, endurance, stability and most definitely - balance. It works pretty much all muscle groups from core to arms and legs, depending on what exercises are done and what position is taken on the reformer.

In the classes I attended, we were instructed on a wider angle of varied exercises - most of which centred around core strength (or lack thereof) while working arm and leg muscles. Not in any way the gentle, stretching exercises I remembered from my mat-based days, Reformer Pilates has you sweating and your muscles burning for each 50 minute session.

Each workout is different. Some focus primarily on strength in leg or arm muscles, while others focus on balance and flexibility. All seem to use and strengthen core muscles, while incorporating elements of balance (and therefore core strength). And all, while challenging for all different levels of fitness, are thoroughly enjoyable.

Pilates Place[/LINK] offers the convenience of studios in two locations. One is in Underwood and the other, brand new, recently opened studio, is located in Mt Gravatt. The new studio is cool and private. It contains several machines - meaning you need to book in advance for classes as they can fill up (there are many classes held throughout the day) but that you still get the individual attention you need as numbers are restricted to just 6 in a class.

You leave the studio feeling relaxed and invigorated - albeit a little shaky in the legs. And for the following day or two, I did have to be wary of muscles used while laughing... or in fact, breathing too, for that matter.

See the website for details about class times, bookings and cost . Cath is offering some great deals to celebrate the opening of the new studio and packages, including try-before-you-buy, weekly and monthly passes, are available. So don't leave your fitness goals until the New Year! Get a fun, challenging head start now.

Pro tip - the coffee shop downstairs serves amazing coffee (and desserts) to give you that extra added incentive to work out if you needed one.
