With their ice-cream sandwiches featuring as the main image on a recent Urban List ' Perth Desserts Bucket List ', it is little surprise that has become wildly popular. And although they initially began as a pop-up, their increasing popularity has led the to open its doors in North Fremantle complete with plastic grass and their iconic ice-cream sandwiches.

Arriving just shy of 12.30pm on a Sunday I was initially surprised at how many empty tables there were. That didn't last long though, and while bookings are accepted, there is a fair trade in walk-ins and takeaways, so it's safe to say you will get your Piggy fix either way.

Facing the North Freo strip is the al fresco area, with large wooden picnic tables on plastic lawn. Inside, the room feels bare, despite framed pictures on the walls. Naked bulbs, concrete floor and some (real) plants dotting the corners of the room – you can tell that no one expects the attention to be on the décor, and with that, your anticipation for the food only increases.

The menu too, looks brief, but it shouldn't be underestimated. This is billed as Southern Californian bar food – think grilled corn, chipotle, pulled pork, chicken wings and tacos. You have three main options: burgers, tacos and salads. The same ingredients recur between them, and the prices are relatively low meaning you can mix and match. It's not share food as such, but you could if you were so inclined.

The tacos are probably the most popular option, with a choice of six and costing $7 or $8 each. Let's be clear – they're not huge at all, so you're going to want more than one, or at least a side of chips ($7) or grilled corn ($5).

Pulled pork, chicken, haloumi and fried avocado tacos are all $7 each, on handmade soft-as-a-baby's-bottom corn tortilla and filled with slaw, salsa fresca and the housemade chipotle sauce.

The baja fish and prawn tacos are $8 each, and all come little baskets on a square of paper. You don't need cutlery, but if you decide you want some, you can easily grab them from the self-serve area in the corner.

They are entirely fresh, too easy to eat and very moreish.

There are also seven rolls and burgers available, ranging from $14 for the pulled pork or chicken rolls to $20 for the Whole Hog which comes with three different piggy products (chorizo, pulled pork and bacon) as well as the usual extras (slaw, salsa, chipotle and cheese).

Other options include salads ($12), hot wings ($10) and the Hog Fries – designated as a side but could probably be a meal in itself - with fries, pulled pork, cheese, salsa, BBQ sauce and sour cream. It's crazy – but the sour cream on those Hog Fries was the tastiest I have ever had.

As awesome as the Tacos are, what brings a lot of people in (us, anyway) are the ice-cream sandwiches. They have at least two flavours every day and at only $7 each are quite possibly the most filling, tastiest and cheapest dessert in Perth. Sandwiched between two house-made chocolate chip cookies, the ice-cream flavours when we visited were macadamia/caramel and coconut/honey.

Simply put, they are the perfect after lunch (or anytime) snack, you can eat them with your fingers, the ice-cream and cookies are good quality, they're fun and you probably should have one before you die. Other flavours they make are salted caramel and chocolate fudge and unlike the main menu, there is no waiting.

I don't even remember seeing a drinks menu – I think it is actually the six cans and bottles lined up along the counter (fizzy water, ginger beer and some softies, all $4 each). You can BYO beer and wine if you remember, and they even offer a list of beer suggestions you might want to bring in to complement your meal.

Opening times are a little haphazard – they are closed Monday to Wednesday, opening Thursday and Friday for dinner (5.30pm-9.30pm) and open weekends for lunch (12 to 2.30pm) and dinner (5.30pm-9.30pm).

Apart from the awesome name, is fun and tasty and the service is friendly, the music is funky and it's the type of place you can sit and chat, and find yourself heading back to order more. And more. And then have an ice-cream sandwich as well.

I guess that's why they call it the .
