This minimalist industrial bakery cafe is hidden away just off the Mount Dandenong tourist road at Shannon Bennett's Piggery cafe in Sassafras.

The Piggery Café has been designed to be warm and rustic, surrounded by all facets of heritage, architecture, food, art, hospitality and an inspiring landscape.

Vegetable gardens provide organic produce and an emu enclosure with the grand ambition of sourcing the fresh eggs to use in the Piggery Café dishes.

No chemicals or harmful farming practices are used. Having been here a few times on day trips to the Dandenongs, the menu is simple with seasonal produce.

The buckwheat waffles drizzled with caramel sauce and poached pear, served with a lashing of fresh cream hit the spot for me.

Soft yet dense, the waffles were perfect for a late lunch - enough energy to tackle the 1000 steps!
