The Piers Festival is the perfect outing for the Sunday after Australia Day. It's free, it starts at 2pm so you've plenty of time to recover from the beer, and it's perfect for families, singles and oldies alike.

On the 27th of January the pier will be brought to life. There will be music and dancing as entertainment, markets in case you feel the urge to shop, and forums and exhibitions to peruse.

Some of the exhibitions will link back into the theme of Australia Day, showcasing Victoria's diversity and multiculturalism. And there's no better place for a celebration such as this that the Port Melbourne Piers. Opening in 1854, the piers have been at the forefront of Victoria's growth and it's community. They've played key roles in events as varied as the Gold-rush, migration, the world wars and tourism.

If you want more information about specific displays check out the program here . Multicultural arts is running the festival, so expect an inclusive afternoon of fun.

Princes Pier in Port Melbourne is super accessible by public transport. Tram 109 will take you along the water front, while buses 250 and 251 will drop you about 400 metres away. Both seem a better proposition than finding nearby parking.

Finishing at 9:30pm, you can catch public transport home too. It's worth staying til the end though as the festival will end on a high, with bursts of fireworks set off over the water. I recommend getting there late if it means you can stay for this sparkling finale.
