Max was famous for his pies in Lilydale many years ago, so it was a pleasant surprise to see the name crop up in Main Street Croydon.

is now owned and operated by Tommy Chua, who took over from Max in 2016. Tommy has been a qualified baker for over ten years.

He sells about 100 pies a day and says the plain meat pie is the most popular, which was awarded a gold medal in the Great Aussie Pie Competition in 2018.

In his window and on a wall in his pie shop, Tommy proudly displays all the awards his pies have won.

In the cold pie display cabinet, I counted twelve different varieties, including Thai red curry chicken pie, steak and potato pie and a steak and mushroom pie.

Tommy says he still uses Max's recipe, but tweaked slightly to make the pastry a little crisper. "We use good ingredients that are top of the range."

You can also have pasties, sausage rolls and quiches. Hot or cold.

I also noticed a selection of tarts and cookies, including lemon tarts, jam tarts and my favourite, neenish tarts.

I was a regular consumer of Max's pies in Lilydale, so naturally, a taste test was in order. My taste buds agreed with me that they were still delicious. I purchased two plain meat pies at a cost of $4-20 each. An appropriate price for a pie (4 and 20.) I thought.

It is often said that pies baked in specialty pie shops taste better. It may be an urban myth, but it is true in Max's case.

There are two small steps into , but you are stepping up to good taste.
