Picnic By The Torrens River

If you're a little hard up for cash, penurious, or otherwise stoney-broke, there's nothing quite like a picnic to make a lunch seem a little more fancy. One of my favourite picnic spots is along the
River Torrens . Provided of course the Adelaide weather isn't in one of its more capricious moods, it can be a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
It doesn't really matter where along the Torrens you park your blanket and basket; there is always something to see, whether it's people taking the
paddle boats for a spin or a rather inexperienced rowing team taking a tumble. On one particularly memorable picnic my friends and I saw a girl feeding a swan and a pelican. This was nothing so unusual in itself, however, suddenly the swan and the pelican decided that the distribution of morsels wasn't quite equal and began chasing the poor girl. I don't know if you've ever seen anything quite like it, but we were in stitches.
To make a good picnic, aside from the occasional cabaret provided by the local wild-life, you'll need some decent nosh. This doesn't have to be posh, 5-star food either. My friends and I have done everything from raiding every small goods stall at the Central Market for a collection of crusty bread, cured meats and good, smelly cheese to nipping out of the office for an hour with a bottle of water and a ham sandwich.
The point of getting a perfect picnic together is to get outdoors. Finding a little spot along the Torrens is a wonderful and relaxing way to spend lunch with a group of friends by yourself, provided there aren't too many other people who have the same brilliant idea.
