Desperate for a burger in Camberwell? I'm going to suggest an awesome place up on the hill called Pickle N Roast. We walked in on a rainy winter day, about 3pm and instantly found the place inviting. The décor is full of warm dark wood, almost something you'd find in France but with industrial style lighting and beautiful photographs lining the walls. It is such a cosy little place, I instantly felt comfortable.
Inspection of the menu makes your mouth water offering a full page of burgers and gourmet sandwiches. The choice wasn't easy, everything looked delicious, but I finally settled on an original Veggie Burger with pineapple and egg whilst my friend chose a Veggie Delight – Bandari.
Luckily for our rumbling tummies the food was served fairly quickly. My burger was served on the freshest, wholemeal bun and though the patty was a little underwhelming, the burger was lovely, the best part being the PNR sauce, like a garlicky, yogurt and pickle sauce. This was also on the sub like sandwich my friend was enjoying and not even a crumb was left on either plate.
I have to say, this is one of the most interesting little sandwich places I have been to, they encourage a style of healthy eating with their sandwiches and burgers served on wholemeal and rye, but far from being dry, the bread fresh and really brings out the flavour of the ingredients inside. I am also a big fan of the pickles they use as they are not overpowering, but really compliment the dishes and add a bit of quirkiness.
Really, if you're the kind of person who enjoys a great sandwich or well made burger, or if you just want to try an alternative to your normal lunch menu, you've got to get to PNR!
