Look to the western side of Unley Rd, between Mary St and Hughs St, nestled among a shopping strip of old timers and you will find the new kid on the block, Pickle In The Middle.
More than just another trendy cafe, Pickle In The Middle is an artisan style eatery crafting almost everything on their menu in house. Not just their pickle name sake, but also their baked goods and unique drinks.
From their Menu I can recommend the 'Sweet Toast'. This dish is made up of banana tahini loaf, topped with whipped yogurt, pickled figs and sweet hazelnut dukkah. The figs were not overly sour or salty like a normal pickle. As figs are naturally so sweet, the pickling process really gave them a nice balance.
]I would also recommend the almost famous 'Cheese 'n' Pickle Toastie'.
An overnight ferment is used to create the traditional home made focaccia, which is then stuffed with mustard zucchini pickles and smoked mozzarella, to then be toasted and served with that days salad.
I highly recommend trying it. It was a far cry from the humble toasted cheese jaffles from our childhood.
Of their hand crafted drinks, I had the Cascara Cola. This is a mix of Cascara (dried coffee cherry), citrus, secret spices and vanilla. I would refer to it as a grown up Cola, it's worth a try.
Pickle In The Middle are open 8am-4pm. The Breakfast Menu is available all day and lunch is available from 11am. Kitchen closes at 3pm.
Remember to check their counter to see their selection of fresh, house-made baked goods. They also serve D'Angelo Coffee and teas blended in the Barossa by Scullery Made.
