Big, red, juicy strawberries, grown in Queensland are back on the shelves and the pickers are busy harvesting a wonderful crop. If you want to pick your own, there are plenty for you and several spots not far from Brisbane to get the freshest of these wonderful fruit.
I went to Rolin Farms, just north of Brisbane at Elimbah, (get onto Pumicestone Road, and head east, then follow the signs).
It was a busy place – with a birthday party and lots of visitors sitting in the sun enjoying life, and others out in the strawberry fields with their little cane basket picking. It's a great activity for children – so families were doing their best to get the perfect fruits to take home. Eating while picking is not allowed, and I am sure that once the product has been weighed and paid for, that the eating starts.
In larger fields, backpackers are busy on strange wheeled contraptions picking – and these are packed and sent to markets and will turn up in supermarkets and fruit shops very soon!
In the little shop there's plenty more items to purchase - from the freshly dipped chocolate strawberries, jams, orchids (Yes, Rolin Farms also do orchids), and delightful gifts, nougat, nuts, and edible treats and icecreams. You can get a great cup of coffee there too.
Strawberries date back to the 1750's in France according to Wikipedia. You can read about them
here.
Apart from them being very yummy, there are health benefits to eating plenty of them according to Queensland Strawberries website. Read about them
here.
In Australia strawberries are harvested at different times. Queensland they ripen from June to October, but in other states the seasons are earlier in the year. Check
