A day in the strawberry fields
I'm lucky I live near a huge strawberry growing region of Queensland. As I travel in the area, I watch the fields being prepared, then the thousands of tiny plants being planted and then see them grow, and soon the berries appear.
Fresh Yummy Strawberries
Then the strange carts carrying the pickers can be seen on the fields and I know that I can buy fresh locally grown strawberries. Yum!
Many people enjoy picking their own and there are many farms in strawberry picking areas that welcome folk to do so. Children love to participate and I suspect sneakily put an extra one or two into their mouths as they pick. Did Mum see that?
I visited Rolin Farms, at Elimbah, which is just north of Caboolture, a short drive from the Bruce Highway. It was a very wet day. The pickers were busy working through the rain collecting the delicious fruits. There were muddy feet and lots of laughs as they continued picking through not so favourable conditions.
On a fine day, there are many who visit to pick or buy their favourite fruit. Buses and Tour Groups visit too.
There's a shop where you can purchase strawberries, or "indulge in some of the farm fare", buy strawberry jam or delicious ice cream. There's spots to sit down and enjoy the experience and a playground for the children to burn off energy.
To find Rolin Farms, exit the Bruce Highway at Exit Number 157, if coming from Brisbane and follow the signs. If heading south from the Sunshine Coast, turn off at the Pumicestone Road exit, and follow the signs.
