The strawberry season is truly upon us, and here are two great locations where you can go to pick your own strawberries. The taste of freshly picked strawberries is second to none - juicy and flavourful - unlike some of the store-bought ones. Also, the experience of hunting through the patch for beautifully ripen strawberries gives children a glimpse of where the fruit actually comes from.
Beerenberg Farm in Hahndorf has been running pickings for over forty years, and this year is no different. From now until about April, their strawberry patch will be open most days between 9am and 4:15pm. However, do check their website before leaving home in case they get picked out. Upon arrival, head to the farm shop to pay an entry fee of $5 per person. Then follow the red flag to the patch to pick your own strawberries. Once you're done picking, head back to the farm shop to pay for the strawberries. Each kilogram of strawberries costs $10.95.
Between now and some time in May,
Harvest the Fleurieu in Mount Compass has a strawberry patch available for picking every day from 9am to 4pm. Entry fee is $5 per head, and two-hour sessions can be booked via their
website . Then, when you arrive, go straight to the market hall to purchase your punnets for $10 each.
