Glen Ewin Estate, located at Lower Hermitage Road, Houghton, SA 5131, is a heritage-listed property catering for functions and events. It is today a very popular venue for weddings and also a tourist destination. The estate is also home to a big fig orchard boasting almost 12,000 fig trees.
Each summer during the fig season, the orchard is open to visitors to pick their own figs. The 2020 season for "Pick Your Own" is now open and will go till approximately the end of March. We made our way there early this morning and when we arrived at 10 am, there were already many visitors. There are rows and rows of fig trees as far as the eye can see with beautiful ripe Brown Turkey figs ready for picking. This is their early variety. Other varieties in the orchard include Archipal, Deanna, Spanish Desert, and Black Genoa which will be available later in the season.
The figs are so sweet and they cannot get fresher than that.
So if you are a lover of figs, do visit the orchard and pick your own. There is a charge of $5 for the entry fee. A tray is provided and the cost of the figs is $10 per kilo.
Check their
