Keep this list for all seasons of fruit & vegetable picking
Nowadays, you can buy many fruit and vegetables all year round. Some of these are grown in hot houses or similar, and therefore you cannot generally pick them yourself. There are, however, still places you can find to pick your own fruit and vegetables around our State all year round.
If you are going to go fruit picking at a farm, you generally need to phone the farm first or check their website. Some of them are not open every day, and it could also depend on the size of their crops each week. This could vary from week to week or even daily, so you do need to check first.
You also need to ask if they have an entrance fee, as some of them do. It is also a good idea to check the prices before you undertake a drive. I would suggest to take along own bags/boxes in case they do not supply these. You also need to make sure you have cash as many are small operators and do not have Eftpos facilities.
Picking the fruit and vegetables yourself ensures you have the freshest possible fruit and vegetables, they taste far better when picked fresh and are best eaten within a few days. Fruit and vegetables are healthier if eaten when fresh, as they lose some of their "goodness" once they have been picked and as time goes by.
This is also a pleasant day out, and in some cases, great outings to take the whole family on.
