Pick your own nuts for tasty autumn treats
Now is the perfect time to escape the city & pick your own nuts. Mt Irvine in the upper Blue Mountains is home to a couple of pick your own nut farms including 'Nutwood Farm' which I recently visited.

At 'Nutwood farm' buckets are provided along with gloves (to protect you from the spiked shells of the chestnuts) and tongs to help pry them open. There is plenty of parking available here and the access to the trees is an easy short walk along relatively flat terrain. Bathroom facilities are also available.

The drive through Mt Wilson is very pretty especially now it's Autumn. Here you'll find a few cafe's and gardens where you can grab a coffee and a snack and there's even a turkish bathhouse museum.
If you are looking to make a full day trip out of it, then take the Bells Line of Road via Bilpin (from North Richmond) which includes spectacular lookouts, Apple farms, Pie shops and even a Cider Brewery.
