Pick your own nuts for tasty autumn treats
Now is the perfect time to escape the city & pick your own nuts.
Mt Irvine in the upper Blue Mountains is home to a couple of pick your own nut farms including 'Nutwood Farm' which I recently visited.

Here you'll find chestnuts and walnuts aplenty. It's coming to the end of the chestnut season but the walnuts are in peak supply. The season runs annually from around mid March until April 10th 2016.

Visitors are free to pick as little or as much as they need and pay at the end for your haul. Walnuts are $10 per kilo and chestnuts are $8 per kilo.

At 'Nutwood farm' buckets are provided along with gloves (to protect you from the spiked shells of the chestnuts) and tongs to help pry them open. There is plenty of parking available here and the access to the trees is an easy short walk along relatively flat terrain. Bathroom facilities are also available.

Once you have picked your fill of nuts,'Nutwood Farm' has a small fire going so you can roast your own chestnuts to eat on the drive home.

The drive through Mt Wilson is very pretty especially now it's Autumn. Here you'll find a few cafe's and gardens where you can grab a coffee and a snack and there's even a turkish bathhouse museum.

If you are looking to make a full day trip out of it, then take the Bells Line of Road via Bilpin (from North Richmond) which includes spectacular lookouts, Apple farms, Pie shops and even a Cider Brewery.

For some inspiration, check out this delicious chestnut stuffing recipe.
