Bilpin is a small town located in the Blue Mountains and famous for its apple farms and produce. Apple picking in Bilpin is one of the top things to do in the area. Driving through the scenic Bells Line of Road, after the towns of Richmond and Kurrajong, comes the apple town of Bilpin. Flanked by fruit shops and cafes serving apple pie and cider, you'll know you are in Bilpin quite easily.
There are plenty of orchards for apple picking in Bilpin, however, on this fine winter's day, we went to
TNT produce . Following the signs from the main Bells Line of Road and turning into Kurts road, 2 kms later we reached the clearing where TNT Produce have their apple farms (Address:153 Kurts Road Bilpin 2758). The rules are simple. $2 per adult and $5 for a kilo of apples you pick. They have pink lady apple trees and you are welcome to eat an apple(s) while you are picking.
The orchards are made of multiple long lanes apple trees bursting with apples. About 15 such lanes are open to the public for apple picking. At this time of the year (early June), the trees are bursting with apples. Beautiful pink and red apples of all sizes are available. We tasted apples from different trees and they were sweet and delicious.
Apple picking makes a great family activity. You can bring your own basket or perhaps grab a plastic carry bag on entry. It is reasonable to spend about 30 to 45 minutes in the orchards picking apples. We did notice that many of the apples had fallen to the ground and were perhaps wasted which was sad to see, but I am sure there would be a reasonable explanation for that perhaps birds, winds and the natural life cycle of a fully grown apple.
We headed back to Sydney with our loot, our own freshly picked apples but not before we had some delicious Bilpin apple pie at the
Pines Orchard .
