Photo Exhibition: Karen Waller – Vulnerable & Helen Roberts – Transitions

On the 3rd of May the Light Gallery, Centre for Creative Photography is opening their latest group exhibition 'Karen Waller – Vulnerable & Helen Roberts – Transitions' with a special public event. All are welcome to view this new photography exhibition showcasing the works of photographers and friends Karen Waller and Helen Roberts. There will be two series of works on show; 'Vulnerable' by Waller and 'Transitions' by Roberts. These works have the themes of men opening up to the camera, and of the camera looking at moments of crisis and transition. Waller grew up in rural South Australia and still maintains strong links with Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula. She trained as a visual artist and now works as a photographer. She has won awards in portraiture and creative excellence from the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers.
With 'Vulnerable', Waller examines the taboo topic of men crying. In each displayed image, the subject's vulnerabilities are exposed, creating confronting and powerful scenes for the viewer. As each subject told stories of grief and loss, Waller photographed the tears that followed. Roberts takes the empathy she cultivated as a pediatric intensive care nurse into her current work as a professional photographer. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers and also volunteers for Heartfelt, an organisation that provides photographs for families who have experienced stillbirths, premature births, or have children with serious and terminal illnesses.
With 'Transitions' Roberts' examines occasions of profound change, in particular experiences of loss, grief, illness and death. These photographs are the starting point for a discussion of these difficult topics, one that hopefully leads to acceptance, comfort and meaning. The exhibition will run from 3rd May to 6th June at the Light Gallery, Centre for Creative Photography, 138 Richmond Road, Marleston. The opening event will be held on May 3rd from 3pm and feature live music by acoustic duo Wayne and Victoria. The exhibition will then continue until 6th June 2015.Entry is free. Gallery hours are 9am–6pm Monday to Thursday, 9am–5pm Friday and 11am–3pm Saturday. For more information on this exhibition, please visit lightgallery.ccp.sa.edu.au
