On Saturday 10 March, at 6am, Melbourne's 'edgiest' theatre space, The Bordello Theatre, went up in smoke. The Bordello Theatre struck a chord with Melbourne theatre-arts lovers as a new inner-city home for stand-up comedy, queer cabaret and jazz acts that had been pre-booked up until September 2018.

Sultry and steamy in the tucked-away attic of Australia's best-known brothel, 'Top of the Town', The Bordello was the creation of Australian circus icon and vaudeville impresario, Roy Maloy and Melbourne entrepreneur, 'Knuckles' AKA Zoe Jones. As Speakeasy , the partnership will continue to and present Vaudeville Theatre in their next door bar and performance venue (Speakeasy HQ) as well as in the underground Vault Theatre. Complete with the original red, velvet curtains from the Tivoli, The Vault Theatre will now host pre-booked artists, such as Jamie Halloran and comedians who are part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The atmosphere of the vault is intimate, perfect for jazz musicians and stand-up comedians. At the back of the stage, the bank vault from Melbourne Colonial days has been converted into a bar.

Rebuilding The Bordello

Speakeasy are committed to rebuilding The Bordello, but have aptly decided on a name change: The Phoenix. Art and theatre lovers would appreciate the herculean task it is to rebuild, and may like to support Speakeasy's fundraising circus day in Melbourne's south-eastern belt, on Sunday 8th of April.

Out of the Ashes, the Phoenix will rise …

At this Sunday's Phoenix Festival, Roy Maloy will come out of retirement to perform a one-off 'extreme stunt show', which serves as an exciting reminder of his nine, world-record winning circus stunts. The performance will be given at Sandown Park Hotel Carpark & Gardens, in Noble Park. Many more of Australia's talented and award-winning circus artists will add spice and flavour to the mix, including crowd favourite Mr Shaggles, an old-fashioned clown act who tells stories through crazy antics and slapstick mishaps. Mr Shaggles may even be upstaged by a cheeky koala called Bruce to help him turn Noble Park into 'lunacy' Park!

Carnivale comes to town
Jugglers will meet balloon animal tamers and acrobats may astonish. The Dreaming Space is a complete outdoor entertainment experience with live music, the Cirque du Flirt performance, a fire show and an outdoor cinema finale. Amusement rides and roving entertainment will punctuate and enrichen the day's festivities. The Phoenix Festival promises to be the ultimate circus variety show, ideal for the whole family.
