Hidden in a elusive corner of Market City in Haymarket is a small eatery that offers tasty and cheap Vietnamese meals that receive thumbs up from most patrons. By the looks of happy faces on the lunchtime crowd, Pho TK must be doing something right.

Having failed on a few occasions to get a seat at noon, I always visit at opening when I have the choice of any table and the kitchen can devote more time and effort into making my order.

Pho TK is a no-frills eatery that serves affordable and tasty traditional Vietnamese street-inspired food averaging AUD10 along with free-flow Chinese tea at your table. One of the most popular and a personal favourite is its Vietnamese Beef Noodles Soup or Beef Pho. The soup is a light and aromatic beef broth without the heavy sweet and salty from MSG (Monosodium Glutamate). The beef slices are still pinky and not over cooked to toughness and the noodles hold their form. It reminds me fondly of another tasty Beef Pho from Tra Vinh in Perth's Northbridge.

Another popular dish is the Vietnamese Vermicelli Salad. It makes an excellent light meal with crunch and bite from fresh Vietnamese herbs and raw vegetables, crispy spring rolls and grilled pork, all lathered in a slight sweet chilli vinaigrette.

Most folks looking for food in Market City generally miss Pho TK because they usually head to the top level for the food court and restaurants. Pho TK's location doesn't help to attract new customers who would not notice the eatery if they didn't know where to look. It is tucked in the level 1 corner of the shopping centre next to a bakery and seafood shop. For most customers entering Market City from Hay Street, your best landmarks are Narby's Bakery and Haymarket Seafood.

A short walk up Sussex Street from Four Points Sheraton, it's one of my favourite places in Sydney City for a quick and delicious Vietnamese fix before noon or a mid-afternoon snack before drinks at Pyrmont Bridge Hotel on the way back to Darling Harbour. If I'm still feeling peckish, there's always the deep fried Thai fish cakes and pig organ soup at Home Thai Restaurant.
