One of the largest annual events for the Filipino community in Melbourne returns this weekend at Melbourne Showgrounds.

The Philippine Fiesta has been running since its inception in 1982, organised by the Philippine Fiesta of Victoria Incorporated (PFVI), a not-for-profit organisation.

Returning for its 34th year, the fiesta celebrates Filipino culture through food stalls, performances, competitions, fashion shows, games and mass (the Filipino community is largely catholic).

Filipino BBQ, Philippine fiesta
It's all about the meat at the Philippine Fiesta!

You'll find some BBQ smells permeating the hall as Filipinos are notorious for their deliciously marinated BBQ meat.

Sweet, sweet gulaman

Top it off with some sweet jelly drink called Gulaman or a mixed ice/jelly/bean dessert called Halo-Halo and you're on your way to immersing yourself into the Filipino culture.

Don't be stunned when you see some wrestling happening - Filipinos love watching it! Have you ever heard of the famous Manny Pacquiao (Pacman)? He is a hero to Filipinos when it comes to boxing, in past years, we even saw replays of old Pacquiao matches being played on screens.

Wrestling is common entertainment at the fiesta

Filipinos also love performing, from singing to breakdancing, so there will be plenty of competitions and they'll have a few performers from the Philippines making an appearance.

Young talent during the singing performances

This includes Leah Patricio, James Wright and Miss Tres - a transgender group from Asia's Got Talent.

For those looking for something to take home, there will also be stalls with cultural items and handicrafts.

If you've never experienced Filipino culture before, this is the perfect place to visit and embrace something new.
