Phamish has been around for quite a few years, but for some reason I've always passed it by. I have discovered that I was seriously missing out.

Tucked in at the bottom of an apartment block across from Luna Park, Phamish is just off the Acland Street food strip. On the weekends it's a popular stop for visitors, but at my weekday lunch visit it was nicely quiet.

I ventured an order for the Mexican breakfast. I was expecting a little scrambled thing accompanied by a token tortilla, but I was surprised to see a perfectly delectable mess of potato, tomato, chorizo and other things ending in 'o' held together by spiced scrambled egg. This mound of heaven was wrapped in a giant tortilla, its maw gaping open as if daring me to actually finish the meal. I couldn't. The tortilla had been made with coriander and other herbs mixed in, and so was more interesting than the average Mexican flatbread, but in the end I just couldn't get anything more into my stomach. My verdict: yum.

My companions' servings were similarly generous. A BLET (E for egg) was fresh and crispy (and took two people to conquer it), and a ham lunch wrap was made more interesting with some roasted pumpkin (two people again). Everything was tasty, and at $10-18 the prices are fair for inner Melbourne breakfasting.

My advice is to approach Phamish in a suitably starved frame of mind. The chefs take the name seriously here.
