The winter wine weekend on the Mornington Peninsula always offers up some excellent wine finds, but we didn't expect such a truly wonderful one literally a couple of kilometres from home. We drive past Phaedrus every day and think how we must visit and today we finally got there!
We'd booked for lunch at a winery much further away which turned out not to be open when we arrived, so it was absolute serendipity that we head back home and on the way decide to pop into Phaedrus (pronounced pheedrus). We hadn't booked but they had a table available and were very welcoming and friendly.
We're pleasantly surprised that this seemingly small winery has 9 wines on tasting, including a new sparkling which we start with and it is divine. Deliciously smooth with a mousse-like texture, we both love it. We then slowly work our way through Fiano, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir Rose', Pinot Noir (2017/2019), Shiraz and Reserve Shiraz. There is not one that we don't enjoy. They are all quality wines and each would suit multiple occasions. The cheese plate we order to enjoy with them is perfectly paired - highly recommend.
We happily join their wine club and bring home a half dozen Sparkling, Rose' and Pinot Noir to share with our family and friends who we know will savour them too. Phaedrus is a genuine hidden gem and how fortunate we are that it's a hop, skip and jump away. Love local and it's worth the drive if you're not!
