When Thomas Petty set up an orchard in the 1850s I doubt he would have thought that 160 years later the apples and an organic cafe still would be thriving. The land around the orchards in Templestowe and Doncaster was orchards for miles, well before it was subdivided for up market housing.

Three generations of Pettys worked the Homestead Road orchard until Parks Victoria purchased the property in 1981. Petty's 44 hectare orchard includes an antique apple orchard, commercial orchard, wetlands and bird hide. The area also includes the wetland, fruit and nut arboretum, Yarra River and surroundings. They grow, displays and distribute more than 200 different types of old and rare apples.

The Heritage Fruit Society manages and maintains the heritage fruit collection in Petty's Orchard. They aim to conserve the antique apple varieties and hold tastings for much of the year (not over winter). For nibbles, tasting and orchard tour

The café is down a dirt track and set amongst paddocks with the Yarra river nearby. It looks like an old tin shed that has been tacked on to. If it were in an overseas country I'd probably drive on by.

The café has a large playground and open space for the kids to play and undercover unique old Aussie style charm. There is a selection of very old tools on the wall that created some conversation with the kids.

I think the cafe needs heaters for the winter, but I really feel the cold. The others didn't complain. It would be glorious in the summer.

We went for hot chocolates and coffee. The cakes and biscuits were the favorite for us. The kids loved the yo-yos. I'm glad I chose the Florentine. It was a very generous size and very tasty. Biscuits were only from $2.50. The hazelnut Nutella muffin was moist and enjoyed by all. With all those rare apples I would suggest they sell apple muffins, apple strudel and other apple products.

They have a large variety of the organic produce you can purchase. I have to warn you the organic coffee and hot chocolate is not like the usual brands. It's less rich, but no doubt better for you and very reasonably priced. Four hot drinks, biscuits and muffin was under $30.

This is very different to the trendy inner city cafes. To add to the feel, kangaroos hopped across the roads as we drove down the street.
