Traditional soap bars with a creative twist
Petrichor has its roots in Greek, petra meaning stone and ichor, the fluid that flows in the veins of gods in Greek mythology. There days the word is used to describe the first scent of dry soil when it rains, the smell of rain!
I have always enjoyed being creative but I am also a practical person, so when I found I could make my own soap from scratch, enthusiasm carried me away. I read as much as I could about soap making and found inspiration from ancient and modern civilisations who make soap for multiple purposes. For example Syrians and their laurel Aleppo soap, Spaniards and their famous Castilla olive soap, Africans and their well hidden recipe for Oso Dudu soap.
What also inspired me to start creating soap from scratch was the need to have a more environmentally friendly home. It saddened me to buy hygiene products in plastic packaging and hand my money to large corporations who are destroying the planet and loading their products with synthetic and toxic substances, so I decided to go back to good old bars of soap.
After long hours of reading, researching and getting supplies together, Petrichor Soaps was born. The bars are made from scratch through a saponification process, bars can contain up to 5 different oils or butters, some have fragrance or essential oils added, some are fragrance free.
Other ingredients used in Petrichor Soaps are Australian native clays, honey, dried herbs and tea leaves, flowers, spices, beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter and even coffee grounds!
So you may be wondering what is the difference between Petrichor Soaps and supermarket bought soaps; the answer is glycerine, this is a natural substance occurring in soap, larger companies remove the glycerine through complex methods so they can add it to more expensive products, such as facial creams and moisturising treatments. They then add other chemicals to the bars so they still lather well and are long lasting, however this leaves the bar with no glycerine and a whole lot of chemicals!
Petrichor Soaps uses natural ingredients, all the colours come from clays, herbs and different oils. For those who don't enjoy heavily scented products, they have scent free bars! Animal lovers are also catered for as well with vegan friendly soap bars. If you are looking for lovely yet practical wedding or party favours, Petrichor can make customised little keepsakes!
When it comes to packaging, I think less is more, it is just good old school soap with an artistic twist, so there is no need to damage the environment with loads of wrappers that just end up in landfill.
If all of this sounds interesting to you, Petrichor Soaps will have a small stall at Flinders Street Market this Sunday 29th November from 10am to 3pm. Pamper yourself with a handcrafted product made from scratch, buy an original present for a loved one this Christmas, and enjoy the simplicity and nostalgia of showering with a bar of soap!
