Back in March 1942, when jobs in Australia were scarce and if you were too old to go to war, some men found employment in the goldfields of the New Guinea Highlands, never expecting the Japanese to bring their attack to the Pacific. Tom Phelps, carpenter, and his mates escaped New Guinea by firstly negotiating the Bulldog Track, before travelling by raft, canoe and schooner to return home.

The Bulldog Track is some one hundred kilometres due west of the famous Kokoda Track and crosses some of the most rugged and isolated terrains in the world, combining hot humid days with intensely cold nights, torrential rainfall and endemic tropical diseases such as malaria. Bulldog Track was longer, higher, steeper, wetter, colder and rougher than Kokoda Track.

Tom Phelps' grandson, award-winning actor Peter Phelps, shares his grandfather's story of courage, resilience, and mateship in "The Bulldog Track".
