[ADVERT]Taste the traditional flavours of Malaysian hawker food at this fast paced popular restaurant, located on 1st Floor, 188 Little Bourke Street, Chinatown, Melbourne.

A cheap eat ($7.50-$21.80 mains), with an extensive menu, prompt service, and family friendly, makes this an easy place to grab a quick meal. [BREAK]

Disappointingly there are no vegetarian mains on the menu, with the vegetable dishes all containing shrimp paste, oyster or fish sauce.

My dining companion and I were less than enthused about the entrée of vegetarian spring rolls which were on the oily side, or the curry chicken which lacked flavour, but our appetites were satisfied by the steamed fish in black bean sauce.

This dish is plentiful, healthy, and has strong but delicate black bean flavours that is pleasing to the palate. The steamed fish is served with rice, and is perfect when accompanied with a side order of steamed green vegetables.

Another Malaysian speciality on the menu, perhaps worth a mention, is Roti Chanai, a flakey thinly layered flatbread, served with a spicy curry of either lamb or chicken. We did not try this, but saw many tables with this order.

Petaling Street has ample seating in a large upstairs area, therefore there is never too long a wait to be seated, and the feeling of being in Asia is experienced in the busy and noisy atmosphere.

Locality in the heart of Chinatown and efficient service make Petaling Street worth a visit for an affordable restaurant to try Malaysian flavours.
