Deciding on a pet is a big decision. There are many factors to take into account before inviting a new member to the family home. If you choose to take care of a puppy, you have to consider price, time, ongoing care costs and safety.

There are so many other animals to choose from than the household puppy or cat. How about a lizard? Or a cute turtle that splashes around every time you walk into the room?

A regular traveller, I have never been able to commit to a four legged friend. But now that I have a permanent home I decided to get my all time favourite pet-a turtle. It only took seven minutes online to gain my reptile license and then I was off to choose my adorable mate with a shell.

Turtles are a fantastic pet for those who like cleanliness and work long hours. And they will be by your side for a long time. The average pet turtle lives over thirty years!

We set up a tank with small stones and the filter and over the last year, watched our turtles grow so big they almost push the tank over at feeding time. We are now in the process of building an outside pond for our friendly reptiles.

Feeding turtles is reasonably cheap and easy. Just grab a packet of bloodworms from the pet store and feed them twice a day and always ensure they receive plenty of direct sunlight. We love taking them outside to play on the grass by the pool and watch them indulge in natural vitamin D.

And not only are turtles fun and easy to keep as pets, they look fantastic gliding around and never fail to have friends and family running over to the tank to check them out.

If you are planning to choose a pet this year, consider gaining your reptile license and decide upon a pet with a difference.

My grand-daughter has had a pet turtle for about 8yeas. 'Franklin' was the size of a 50c piece when she purchased him. Now he is the size of a small saucer!
