Pet Sematary (2019) - Film Review



Pet Sematary (2019), written by Matt Greenberg (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and 1408) and Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train and "J is for Jesus" from ABCs of Death 2) who based the script on the 1983 horror novel of the same name, written by Stephen King (Cujo and Carrie) and directed by Kevin Kölsch (Starry Eyes and 2016's Holidays) and Dennis Widmyer (2009's Absence and Postcards from the Future: The Chuck Palahniuk Documentary) tells the story of a regular family, who are put in extraordinary circumstances after discovering that the block of land they purchased contains a graveyard, which the local children have buried their deceased pets in a ritualistic manner for generations.



While technically speaking this film is a remake of the 1989 Pet Sematary, it is also a unique and refreshing take on the story, which is a rare gem to behold, provided you can avoid the trailer, which terribly spoils the film.



Starring Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys and 2015's Everest) as Louis Creed, a doctor, husband and loving father, who moves his entire family out into the country in pursuit of a better life, Amy Seimetz (Alien: Covenant and 2012's Sun Don't Shine) as his wife Rachel, Jeté Laurence (2017's The Snowman and Jessica Jones) as their daughter Ellie, both Hugo and Lucas Lavoie in their debut roles as their son Gage, who look strikingly similar to Miko Hughes (Kindergarten Cop and Wes Craven's New Nightmare) who played the original Gage Creed in 1989, John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun and Shrek's Thrilling Tales) as their often misunderstood and downtrodden neighbor Jud and of course Tonic, JD, Leo (My Cat if a YouTuber) and Jager (A Dog Walker's Christmas Tale) who each took their turn at playing the families much-loved cat Church, who is just adorable!

Soon a tragedy falls upon the unsuspecting family and Jud takes pity upon them and reveals a secret place to Louis, with the best intentions of helping, but everything goes very wrong and all hell breaks loose, making things worse and worse as times goes on until things reach their dramatic and very cool climax.



Aside from the brilliant acting, writing and direction this film went in, the absolute highlights of this film lie within the cinematography and wonderful use of the locations featured, along with the masterfully selected sound and special effects, which really propel this film along, while working together beautifully to ramp up the scare factor for some viewers.



Needless to say, this is one remake actually worth seeing on the big screen!
