While sipping my coffee at the Pourhouse cafe, I found myself intrigued by the surrounding artwork on display. There were paintings of different architecture and scenes from around my beloved home Brisbane. There were also portraits of dogs and puppies and they were so cute.

Ambling around behind the staircase, I found the working hub of the gallery, the artist studio. The artist in residence is Kylie Farrelly and she welcomes you into her space with a bubbly smile.

I love the fact that the studio isn't cordoned off from the rest of the gallery. It is in fact a major part of it which you can walk into and interact with Kylie as she creates her masterpieces. On one wall you can see her works in progress. In the center is a large paint smeared table and tucked into the corner is an easel where you are likely to find her painting.

Having been into loads of galleries before (sometimes kicking and screaming), it made such a difference to not only see the end product, but all the stages in between. Those first layers where there is only the background and you have no idea what it will become, and the messy splotches that have been dripped here and there. It all gives extra meaning and depth to the final artwork.

Throughout the week, Kylie has her best friend Buzz keeping her company. He has his own bed and favorite toy stashed under the table. Kylie will happily tell you about the book she is writing based on Buzz and his adventurous walks.

Kylie started painting portraits of Buzz and his four-legged friends that he met on his walk over a year ago. Before she knew it, she had over 47 puppy paintings and held a PAWtraits Exhibition last year.
