Everyone needs a weekend break away now and then and that includes pets too. So with this in mind here are two tried and tested pet-friendly properties close to Sydney. Holly Lodge, Blue Mountains
Located close to Sydney, set in the tranquil surroundings of Medlow Bath, is the equally tranquil Holly Lodge. This place is as close to cat (and dog) heaven as it gets, and despite its peacefulness, the close proximity to all the main attractions provides the best of both worlds for the discerning visitor.
Buried beneath the tree-studded garden at Holly Lodge is the owner's loyal dog 'Buddy', where a plague and tree stand in his memory. The backyard isn't fenced, but dogs can enjoy it all the same – just keep an eye on them. On a shelf in the kitchen, guests can find a tub of birdseed the animal-loving proprietors leave for you so you can become acquainted with the lodge's resident rosellas.
Inside the lodge, there is an inviting, Christmassy feel and despite staying there in late December the nights felt surprising cold - so the open fireplace came as a great relief. The three adequately sized bedrooms are comfortable and the open plan style creates a cute cabin atmosphere. Don't be fooled by the name, cats and birds are also welcomed to this secluded rainforest retreat. Located approximately eleven kilometres from the small town of Berry lay two delightful cottages on Mt Camberwarra. Both cottages are far enough from each other to ensure privacy, but close enough not to feel totally isolated.
On arrival you are greeted with delicious homemade lemon drizzle cake and enough free ranges eggs to last your stay. The personal touches don't end there, with complimentary Twinnings tea, coffee and milk on offer; these little touches go along way in making your trip extra special.
Red Dog Retreat is also a popular stop over for competing canines at the nearby dog show in Robertson. The cottages come equipped with an outdoor pet enclosure, which keeps your pet entertained, and offers a great alternative to going outside if your neighbours happen to be wolfhounds!
As night time descended in the Kangaroo Valley so did the abundance of wildlife that calls Red Dog Retreat home. The night sounds of the rainforest were reminiscent of a David Attenborough documentary, sending everyone into a deep sleep except the cat who listened attentively most of the night.
The very amiable owner Rachael Carey, says that; 'as animal lovers we enjoy meeting people who come to stay at Red Dog Retreat' and luckily for our pet Gershwin 'all past guests get 10% discount on their return'. Well, that was like lyrebird music to his ears!
