In Brisbane, you're spoiled for choice when it comes for pet shops. In fact, it's very likely that everyone living in a suburban area can access a pet shop within a 15 minute drive from home! With the majority of pet shops being franchised chains such as Petbarn
and Best Friends Pet Supplies
to name a few, you're probably wondering whether there are any independent pet shops not linked to a franchise? Well, yes, there are - and
is one of the best I've been to.
Where is , and what is its history?
is located in Mt Gravatt, 10km south from Brisbane's CBD. Mt Gravatt was one of Brisbane's largest suburbs until it was divided into Mt Gravatt East, Upper Mt Gravatt, and Mt Gravatt South (now known as Wishart). Beginning in 1957 as Mt Gravatt Produce Agency in an area that was predominantly rural; by the early 70's, the area had changed considerably, such that there were more families and more pets. Mt Gravatt adapted to this change accordingly by adopting the name Mt Gravatt, and, during the 80's and 90's, gradually phased out the produce business to become, specifically, a pet oriented store.
is now one of the longest standing private businesses in the pet shop area; pioneering the concept of a complete pet care centre with over 40 specialist staff for each section. Since the very beginning, has been family-owned and has stayed as a family-owned business throughout all their changes. Support your local independent pet store!
What sets apart from other pet stores?
With "leading the way in pet responsibility" as 's mission statement, you can rest assured knowing that your pet (whether it be a dog or a cat or a bird or a rodent or reptile or fish) will be in good hands. With staff trained specifically in their own departments, you're sure to be provided with the best possible expertise and advice, on top of exceptional service. In addition to help and advice from staff, also have heaps of brochures and information packs for pet owners, from mice to dogs and everything in between.
What products does sell?
If you're looking for an item that is at least somewhat pet related, is sure to have what you're looking for. To quantify this claim, I did a quick search on their website and found:
That makes a total of 2656 products for animals. Those are some very
impressive numbers, especially considering there were products that are sold in store (e.g. Big Dog Pet Foods
and Hugo's Ice Creamery
) that are not sold online - this means that the number of products sold in store is likely to be higher than the 2656 listed online. I have no words, except wow
Oh, and keep an eye out for helpful signs around for dog owners, especially new pawrents - for example, " recommends bones and treats be fed under supervision, and that "rotating toys keeps your canine friend stimulated".
As a side note, Eddy's personal favourite part of is definitely the Petisserie and Treat Bar! These can be found near the check out counters, giving dog and cat owners a chance to grab some goodies for their beloved furbabies on their way out.
What services does offer?
offers a range of services with only the customers' best interests in mind, including:
What facilities does have in store for dogs?
conveniently has an electrical weighing scale that is strictly for dogs only - this is to ensure that pet owners know for sure how much their dog weighs, such that they know which size medication to purchase (as flea/tick/heartworm etc. medication is weight dependent). They also have a water bowl with running fresh water to ensure that all dogs stay hydrated during their visit to .
Most franchised pet stores have a VIP club; does , being an independent pet store, have the same?
They sure do! Membership costs only $25 per year (or $59.95 for 3 years), with VIP members getting to save up to 15% off retail price every day. It's quick and easy to join in store - members get a normal sized club card in addition to a smaller card to put on your keyring. Don't fret, however, if you forget to bring it with you to shop, because can look up existing members on their system even without the card.
Is there anything else worth noting about ?
Note: Just opposite is Abbeville Street Park , home to one of the dog parks that Eddy and I frequent on a regular basis.
