Searching for the most exhilarating events in and around Perth I hit the jackpot. Reading for hours about the Worlds Festival and the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, this event at a minimum, should be included as a day trip. Definitely one not to be missed.
Concluding a harmonious shift from the Fremantle Festival running 18th November – 4th December, the Worlds Festival, programmed by North Street Productions, will play host to an enormous line-up of events, synchronised with the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, being held from 3rd – 18th December and broadcast to over 60 nations worldwide. 'The Worlds' will come together and Fremantle will see 16 more days of celebration, with the theme 'where the land meets the sea.'
The Worlds Festival will get underway at Fremantle Esplanade with INXS set to fire up the evening on 3rd December, joined by Grinspoon. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and appear to be selling fast. Children under 18 years old are expressly required to have an adult accompany them into the concert. Please check 'Event Info' for items not permitted to be taken in, so you won't be disappointed.
The opening concert remains as the only paid event. The Worlds Festival will have over 250 free events on offer. North Street Productions in Perth is preparing an assortment of entertainment and activities and includes local and international supporters and artists. The directors of North Street Productions have a wealth of experience and the event is set to be memorable.
The Worlds Village on Esplanade Park in Fremantle will become epicentre for many sailors, spectators and the like, with a stream of constant activity and exhilaration. Here lies the main stage and concert, performances, stalls, massive screens, food, Kids' Corner and much more.
Onlookers can get a close view of the bay's arena style action from the shoreline, just minutes away, with Perth 2011 Medal Course in Bather's Bay, Fremantle, now suitably known as 'Centre Course.'
The famous 'Fremantle Doctor' sea breeze should present a stimulating challenge to competitors. Strong winds sometimes spear up to 100km inland and it's getting closer to Fremantle's windiest time of the year, around December to January.
Festivities aren't constrained to the Worlds Village. It's possibly the most exciting, but there's plenty going on in other venues around Fremantle.
There's the Little Creatures Brewery for all your after-hours food and amusement; Street Arts around Fremantle; Spare Parts Puppet Theatre shows; Kidogo Arthouse indigenous art exhibition; The Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery exhibition; Community and school involvement in the Woolstores project; Helicopter sea rescue demos; Model yacht racing. The list goes on. A full program will be available in the West Australian late November.
Perth 2011 ISAF World Championships
To the all-important Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships that involve over 1,200 sailors and thousands more officials. Organising the event would have taken co-ordination and management on a massive scale. In 2008, John Longley was appointed Event Director of company Western Australia Pty Ltd, formed to manage the event.
Ten Olympic sailing events are lined up for competitors from countries all around the world to compete for world championships. The contest, a primary qualification, will decide which nations go through to the 2012 London Olympic Games. With around 1,000 boats to cruise feverishly about the bay, it's stepping up as the largest sailing event since the 1987 America's Cup in Fremantle.
John Longley said, "Hosting the ISAF Sailing World Championships is a major event for Perth and Western Australia and with 1200 athletes from 80 nations competing in Fremantle in December, the atmosphere and vibrancy will be significant," Longley said.
What will really make this 16 days more memorable for so many of the athletes and accredited personnel will be the Worlds Festival and the chance to enjoy themselves away from the rigours of competition."
For special attention, Perth 2011 Club memberships are attainable and provide anyone the opportunity to meet and mix with the champions of sailing themselves.
Whether you party close to the champions, or with your family and friends near the shore, I'm betting this is going to be an event of a lifetime for Australians and people the world over. Come and barrack for Australia or your favourite country. Liking sailing or not, you will be captivated.
