You may think roller derby is something that doesn't exist outside of the movies, but it does and it's happening here in Perth on Saturday 7 July.

Professional roller derby began in the United States in the mid-1930s and was hugely popular throughout the next decade. With the advent of television and other entertainment choices it became less athletic and more melodramatic, until it was almost a parody of itself.

Roller derby faded from public view until early in the 21st century when the documentary Hell On Wheels told the story of a group of Texas women who were trying to revive the sport. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Today roller derby is played in many countries and is under consideration as an Olympic sport in 2020.

The formed in 2008 and features two home teams, the Bloody Sundaes and the Mistresses of Mayhem.

offers a great combination of sporting skill and drama, with most players using skater names that honour the theatrical heritage. Don't miss this chance to see Hammer, Malice Springs, Calamity Pain and others fight it out for dominance.

Catch the action at Herb Graham Recreation Centre. Doors open at 6:15. Tickets are $15 adults and $8 for children over 6 from Trybooking or Morley Rollerdrome (more at the door).
