Night tours with regards to space are always fascinating. This is a list of tours you can do from the Perth Observatory.

There are four kinds of night sky tours:

  • Dark Sky Nights
  • Dark sky nights are when there is no moon. On these nights, you will see the fainter objects such as globular clusters and nebulae. These will show up well against the darker background of a moonless sky.

  • Moonlit Nights
  • Moonlit nights are when the moon is something that you will be looking at. The best detail on the lunar surface is seen around the half-moon phase. Star clusters and bright nebulae will also be visible.

  • Full Moon Nights
  • Full moon night tours are when a full moon occurs on a weekend or during a school holiday period.

    1. Night Sky Tour
On this tour, you will see our amazing night sky through the wide range of telescopes at the Observatory's sky viewing nights.

The volunteers will take you on a grand tour of the Southern Hemisphere's sky with a wide range of targets, including Nebulas, planets, dying stars, and huge star clusters.

You will also be able to look through the museum and see historical instruments, a meteorite exhibit, astrophotographs as well as artwork and admire the Atlas Coelestis. This is the first Star Atlas ever printed in 1729 and is by John Flamsteed, the first astronomer royal at the Greenwich Observatory in Great Britain.

The tours will be on in May at 7.30 pm and you can book your tickets by scrolling down at this link.

The cost of this 1½ to 2 hour tour is:

  • Adult: $40.00
  • Concession: $30.00
  • Child: $20.00

  • This will be a fascinating tour and will not be on after May until October 2019, so make sure you book now.

    2. Towel Day Night Tour

  • Towel Day is celebrated every year on 25th May as a tribute to the author Douglas Adams by his fans. On this day, his fans carry a towel with them as described in Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Or else they sometimes share their folded animal towels to show their appreciation for the books and their author.

The importance of the towel was introduced in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy original radio series in 1978. The follow-up book explained the importance of these towels in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy universe in chapter 3. Here there was much of the same wording as the original radio series which explained that a towel is about the most useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

You can read more about this event and make your bookings at this link.

     3. Night Sky Tour Return Bus Trip

    Child: $20.00

Astronomers say the best time for viewing our southern skies is during winter.

This year the volunteers at the Perth Observatory are offering to brave the cooler weather to show you planets. You will also see the galactic centre passing overhead showing you many deep sky treasures that you can't see in summer.

These Winter Night Tours will run from June through to August. If there are clouds or even rain on the night you will then be provided with an amazing guided tour of the Observatory. They will be on:

  • 31/05/19, 1/06/19, 7/06/19, 8/06/19, 21/06/19, 22/06/19, 28/06/19, 29/06/19, 5/07/19, 6/07/19, 7/07/19 and 26/07/19.

  • Either way, you will have a hot chocolate at the end of the night so why not put on your warmest coat, hat and boots and join in on the hilltop for a very different experience.
