As an adult, there are many known advantages of being bilingual and trilingual. For example, there are
communication advantages, as those who speak a second or third language are able to communicate with different communities and are most likely to have a better understanding of their own cultural heritage.
Employment advantages are one of the major advantages of being bilingual or trilingual, as being able to speak a second or third language automatically results in wider job prospects.
There are also
cultural advantages, as those who speak two or three languages can go on holiday to various overseas destinations and confidently speak the local language, as well have a better understanding of the local customs and traditions. And whilst you are never too old to learn a second language, there is much
research which suggests that the earlier you learn a language, the better.
Learning a second language at a young age also has a range of added benefits; not only will learning a second language expose children to another culture and broaden their world view, but more often than not, children are able to speak the respective second language without an accent and they often find learning a second language fun and engaging, as they learn through a range of interactive methods, such as reciting nursery rhymes and songs or participating in games involving role play. Best of all, children can learn over several years and with a support network of teachers and parents, they will gradually build their confidence. And once they learn a second language,
learning a third is much easier.
If you have ever thought of enrolling your child in language course, make note of the upcoming
