Greyhounds are sighthounds and all the ones I have met have had the most placid and delightful natures. They are generally quiet and do not need a lot of exercise.
Many of this breed are euthanised as they are no longer needed on the race track. During the past ten years, several groups have sprung up to rescue these dogs which are no longer wanted. They look after them and find them their forever, loving home where they will hopefully lead a good life being loved unconditionally. I would term these dogs as a people dog, as the ones I have known have loved to be amongst people.
In order to raise awareness to the plight of this breed, there is going to be a 2019 Great Greyhound Global Walk. This is being held at Tomato Lake Kewdale on the 9th June 2019 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon.
This is an event that is registered with the City of Belmont as well as The Great Global Greyhound Walk with the organisers in the UK.
There will be two different walks - one will be a long walk, and the other will be shorter. The longer course is about 1.4 kms around the lake.
You will need to sign on from 9.15 am and the walk will start at 10.00 am sharp. The spot where you sign on will be near the totem poles on Oat Street - the same place as last year.
You will receive a free ticket in the raffle for each dog that you sign up for in this walk. The prize is a lovely dog basket which is once again donated by Petstock Belmont.
Last year, Perth broke the Southern Hemisphere record for the number of people going into this walk and there were 40 walks in this area. This included 142 greyhounds and 8 sighthounds in total.
We were ranked world number three in the world statistics for this event! This was indeed a great effort as the weather on the day was freezing and wet. This year, it is hoped that we will outstrip these last year's numbers and do even better!
Please note: All dogs must be on lead and those that are not green collared should be muzzled to comply with the Dog Act.
Everyone is welcome, even if you do not have a sighthound to walk with. This event is held globally for awareness about the breed. It is a great way to demonstrate how lovely these hounds are and what great family pets they make. It is also fun to meet like-minded people at the event!
So, make sure you mark down the date and bring those sighthounds along, so they can also mix and have fun!
