Ever been to Burma? They call it Myanmar these days; or to Thailand? Well if you don't have time for a quick trip to Asia, these two food fairs are a good way to get a taste of Asia here in Perth. The Burmese Association of WA and the Thai Australian Association of WA show off the food from their homelands on a monthly basis. Both events are held at the Australian Asian Assocation Hall, at 275 Stirling Street, Perth.
On the way in we exchanged our money for money tokens which we exchanged for the food we chose inside. Groups of people stood behind desks, kind of like at a school cake stall, with different Burmese dishes available at each. There were tables set up for people to dine in but dishes were also packaged to take away. If you buy up big, like some of the people we saw leaving with bags full of takeaway containers, you could stock your fridge and freezer and have enough Asian flavours to keep you going until the following month's food fairs.
The Thai food fairs, which are a similar type of event are usually held the following day. Entry to the Thai food fair is by gold coin donation and the event runs from 10am to 1pm. The Burmese food fairs go from 10am to 2pm.
